Chapter Six

Constance

Axel was distant on the drive home. Quiet and contemplative. I guessed it was the phone call he took while we were having tea. He hadn’t mentioned it after he came back in but he’d been in a hurry to leave after it.

That cake, by the way, absolute heaven. Axel clearly hadn’t appreciated my enthusiasm because his eyes turned dark and stormy and he couldn’t wait to get out of there when his phone rang. Deb would appreciate it. In the kitchen, I pulled my mobile from my pocket and unsurprisingly found there was no signal.

“Bugger! I should have tried this while we were in town. You obviously had a signal there.” I took a chance. “Can I use the landline? I really want to tell Deb about that cake.”

Axel scowled at me. “That line is for emergencies.”

His moody stare, fixed on me, should have been unnerving. I’m sure it would have been to some. But I found myself wondering what his steely eyes would look like when he was turned on. All in the name of writing research, obviously.

I tapped out a text to Deb, Had the most amazing coffee cake today. You’ll love this place!

“It will send when the signal pops back up.” I put my phone back in my pocket, went to the table, fired up my laptop to give myself a reason to not look at Axel.

He strode towards me, pinning me between him and the kitchen table. “Have you used it before now?”

“Used what?”

“The landline.”

His face was in mine. Body leaning over me. So close. I shook my head, pulling in a breath that did nothing to calm my tripping heart. The scent of the peanut butter milkshake lingered on his breath. If he kissed me, would I taste it. I shouldn’t be thinking these things.

“Are you sure?”

“I haven’t used it, Axel.”

My phone chose that moment to pick up a signal and beep its notification at me. Still pinning me in, Axel’s hand slid over my hip, reached into my pocket, and took out the phone.

“Sounds delicious. I miss you. Let’s make plans for when this crap with twonk face is done,” he read aloud. The gravel in his voice grew rockier with each syllable and I couldn’t figure out why. He looked down at me. “Have you used the phone?”

“I told you, no!”

“Don’t lie to me, Constance.”

I put my hands on his chest and pushed him back a step. “I haven’t used the phone. Why? What’s going on? This isn’t about a text message from Deb. You’ve been in a mood since you took that phone call in town.”

He took the sim card and battery out of the phone and shoved them in his pocket.

“Wha … What are you doing?”

“Keeping you safe!” His voice was edged with a lethal tone.

“That’s not rational behaviour.”

“It is if I can’t trust you to stay offline.”

“Tell me what’s going on, Axel.”

Turning his back and running a hand through his hair, he said, “Some reporter got wind of your identity.
